If you are a business owner then you know the importance of keeping good employees. They will make or break your business because they are who the customer sees and deals with when you are not there. There are so many levels of good service. You can be timely and efficient and still leave your customers wanting more. If you have happy employees then you will most likely have happy customers. People can feel it when they walk into a place of business and it is a healthy workplace.
Hanging on to good people is obvious. How to accomplish that is not. A lot of places lose decent people regularly and don't know why. When you train someone you are investing in them. That is money spent and should be taken into consideration. Some owners and managers think that if someone is working for them that they can tell them to do most anything and they should do it to keep their job. What you hire someone to do and how you treat them is important.
Make sure you have employees that are worthy of your employment. You have to look closely here. It may seem that someone is really doing a crappy job but it turns out that the manager over him never properly trained him. This is more common than you think. If you know that someone is really not doing their job then cut them lose. Before any decisions look very carefully at how your leaders are managing people. A manager can feel overwhelmed and not properly instruct people in the beginning. You then have a lot of trial and error on the part of the new employee, which is unnecessary.
If you have a reward system it can help people to want to work harder, or to do a better job when they have to. The work load can vary greatly at times and there should be a way to give your employees more when they are really busting their butts. In the hospitality industry the harder you work, the more tips you receive, usually. Sometimes though there are rushes that really push people beyond the call of duty. This is a good time to bust out those company hats and t-shirts out. A gift for working so hard.
You want people to be able to tell you if there are issues. If you put up a suggestion box they could do that without fear of getting into trouble. It is really good if you have a family atmosphere. When a group gets comfortable together enough to hang out outside of work then you are doing something right. That is really the ticket to keeping employees. They will stay if they feel that they are part of a family.
Promotional clothing makes a great incentive to hardworking employees. It is a fabulous idea to show your appreciation with promotional gifts every once in a while.
