Trichomoniasis is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases that affect both men and women who are sexually active. This is one of the curable STDs and symptoms are more common in women. Trichomoniasis is caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. The vagina is the most common site of infection in women, and the urethra is the most common site of infection in men. This is transmitted through sexual activities, often penis-vagina or vulva-vulva. Women can acquire the disease from infected men or women, but men usually contract it only from infected women.
Most men who are infected with trichomoniasis do not show symptoms. Some men may experience irritation inside the penis, mild discharge, or slight burning after urination or ejaculation. Women may show more symptoms than men. They may have a frothy, yellow-green vaginal discharge with a strong odor. The infection also may cause discomfort during intercourse and urination, as well as irritation and itching of the female genital area. In rare cases, lower abdominal pain can occur.
One who is infected with the disease is also put at high risk for HIV. If the patient is pregnant, her baby may have low birth weight and might even be infected with the disease. The baby may also experience serious health problems when infected.
The patients may have a physical examination and laboratory test to diagnose trichomoniasis. Another way is to take an STD test in a hospital or local health center. This is to confirm if the person is truly infected or not.
Trichomoniasis is curable. It can be cured with prescription drugs, either metronidazole or tinidazole, given by mouth in a single dose. Symptoms may disappear a few weeks after taking medications. It is also possible that one may be re-infected. So, it is important to complete all prescribed treatment and follow preventive measures advised. Once a person is diagnosed with STD, he or she is required to take a regular screening and testing. This is check for possible re-infection.
There are several ways to avoid getting infected wit htrichomoniasis. The surest way to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases is to abstain from sexual contact, or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected. Condoms may also be consistently used to prevent trichomoniasis or any other STDs.
If a person has seen signs or symptoms appearing in his or her body, the person should immediately seek for medical help. A person may be tested for STD in a hospital or local health center. These health sites offer local STD testing anytime a patient needs it.
There are also some STD testing clinics where one may be treated with specialization. These clinics are now sited in different states around U.S to further reach out to those who needs to be tested. One may also be tested by a quick STD testing to have quicker results. This enables one to have immediate treatment after being diagnosed with STD.
Once diagnosed with STD, treatment may depend on the disease and its severity. If the disease is curable, then the treatment will include medications.
