Not every man who develops Peyronie’s disease will require Peyronies treatment. In approximately half of the cases of Peyronie’s disease, the problem self-corrects or heals on its own without any direction care. It was this observation – that Peyronies is a self-limiting problem about half the time, that prompted the first use of Alternative Medicine to improve the ability of the body to heal and repair the tissue changes commonly associated with this problem.

Because there is no standardized or recognized medical Peyronie’s disease treatment, many medical doctors and medical specialists admit they do not have any form of therapy to offer these patients.

Tamoxifen is supposed to reduce the formation and density of the fibrous plaque associated with Peyronie’s disease. Its results are disappointing and irregular and tamoxifen has fallen out of favor with the urologists who initially prescribed it heavily; its popularity has gradually faded over the years.

Vitamin E is often prescribed by physicians who, lacking a proven drug treatment, often make the mistake of suggesting the use of synthetic forms of this vitamin. In it natural form it can be effective when used in a larger plan of Alternative medical care, but this method is often not fully understood by the doctor and assures lack of success when attempts are mismanaged.

Verapamil, a high blood pressure medication, has also been used in Peyronie’s disease treatment with inconclusive and disappointing results. It is sometimes used topically, and injected into the Peyronies plaque at other times. No convincing effectiveness has been demonstrated with either method of delivery.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, or ESWT, for breaking up the calcified Peyronie’s scar was tried for several years, and has also fallen out of favor. One of the roadblocks to success of this method is that very few PD scars or plaques ever become calcified in the first place. Also, the strong shock waves are found to irritate the delicate area of Peyronies injury, resulting in additional problems, not fewer.

Surgery is used as a last measure of medical care because bad results can be so unpredictable and extreme. Surgery is usually only considered an option when Peyronie’s disease has continued or worsened over 18 months or longer. In extreme cases where surgery goes bad, eventual amputation of the penis might be the only option left to reverse the effects of excessive scarring that occurs after surgery.

Traction devices are expensive mechanical devices used to pull the distorted tissue in an effort to reduce curvature. Most men cannot wear these traction devices because of the pressure applied to the delicate tissues. Some cases of Peyronie’s disease are reported to have been caused by the traction devices when they are used for enlargement.

Alternative medical Peyronies treatment can take many forms, such as vitamins E and C, MSM, acetyl-L-carnitine, PABA, systemic enzymes such as nattokinase and serrapeptase that break down fibrous tissue, copper peptides, and several other methods of treatment.
