When we are children we tend to dream about what we will do as adults. The many careers that we select are ones like police officers, school teachers, doctors, astronauts, cowboys and movie stars. We tend to aspire to be what we see. While these tend to be childhood dreams that some of us follow, others will go into totally different directions. I am sure that very few of you ever dreamed of having a calling in psychology. Psychiatrics on the other hand deals with the emotional aspects of a mentally broken person. The help that is granted by these professionals can give a stable platform for many of these people to begin their lives. Often times a prescription for drugs, such as anti-depressants, anti-anxiety and anti-psychotics are prescribed.
Online Psychology Degree
A career in psychology is both lucrative and exciting. Someone with a degree in psychology can expect to work in a healthcare field or in psychology research fields. But, did you know that it's also a nice way to enter the business world? Every job, no matter what it is, involves aspects of human behavior that often times requires psychological counseling.
An online psychology degree program can offer any level from a certificate to a doctorate. To obtain a degree in psychology, basic course work must of course be accomplished. This can include, but may not be limited to, courses in biology, the social sciences, research methodologies, behavioral psychology and clinical science. Fields of psychology can incorporate child psychology, the sports fields, clinical settings, schools and others.
School Psychologist
With the latest federal education legislation, a retiring workforce, and an increased focus on children's mental heath, school psychologists are desperately needed across the country. In fact, colleges with programs to train school psychologists cannot keep up with the demand. A typical program consists of two years of graduate courses and a one-year internship. Students from these programs, however, have no problem getting jobs and usually find their work extremely rewarding.
Training and Education
It is not enough to just have formal training - it is important to back up that training with experience and practice in the field. A graduate degree is a must for every psychologist; a bachelor's degree in a particular field of expertise to be precise is mandatory.
Those who want to become clinical psychologists or counseling psychologists with a private practice and those who want to get into teaching or research require a doctorate or PhD after their Masters degree. This takes up to seven years to acquire. Child Psychology for example is one branch of psychology that deals with children experiences and their responses to these experiences. The role of a child psychologist is to help the child deal with these experiences and help them strike a balance for positive living. A person who picks this branch of psychology will for example have to be a very patient individual and most of all, like children.
