Futons are a versatile piece of furniture that originated in Japan. They were created to be slept on at night and to be put away during the day to create more space in the room.
A traditional Japanese futon was placed upon a thick tatami mat. The original creation of the Japanese futon was based on the need for a room to have much space and light. Rooms were usually separated by movable screens. When morning came, the screens were removed and the futon beds were put into a closet, therefore making a spacious room.
Futons found in the United States have changed from the original Japanese design. They can be transformed from a bed to a couch or to a chair. They can be made from a variety of materials such as cotton, wool, polyester or foam. The fibers of the futon are made from webbed layers. The layers are then pulled over and the futon zippers are fastened. The weight, size and comfort of a futon is determined by its material. For example, foam and wool filled futons produce a more rigid and firm shape. These types are most compatible with bi-fold frames to help prevent the material from caving in and sagging. In contrast, futons filled with polyester and cotton are more flexible than other types. A tri-fold frame is the best choice for these types of fillings in a futon. These may also be converted into a chair.
Western futons, found in the United States, are placed on a wooden or metal frame to more easily convert from a bed or to a couch. The frame generally folds in the center for a couch and then can be flattened to function as a bed. These futons can generally be purchased with a frame and a mattress combined. Some even have replaceable covers that allow for flexibility in design.
Some futons even come in full and queen sizes. This can be cost effective when serving as the main or only type of bed used by an individual and are considerably cheaper than a standard bed.
If a wooden frame on a futon is preferred, consider the type of wood used. This can determine how long the item will last. Certain types of wood are sturdier and last longer than others. The sturdier woods include maple, oak, beech, cherry and ash. These types of wood are dense and hold up longer.
Metal frames are more economical and can be easier on the pocketbook. They can come in different styles and are quite durable.
