Composting tumblers are the high end composting bin. They can help turn a compost pile quickly, and do it with a minimum amount of effort. While costing more that some other compost bins, it may be that you get what you pay for. Let's look at some of the advantages of a composting tumbler.

Rotation of the Compost Pile

It's well known that most effective way to get rapid composting is to turn the pile every few days, after the center has started to cool. Getting all the material to get worked in the hot center of the pile. This hot center is where the action is, but it can be difficult to get all the material to work in the middle of the pile. A tumbler makes this job simple by reducing it to the act spinning or rotating the bin.

Conserving Compost Pile Moisture

A tumbler has enclosed sides, so it will do a better job of retaining moisture in those hot dry weather days. They also do a good job in keeping excess moisture out in the rainy season. A pile that's too wet can be a smelly pile.

Protection from pests

Most compost piles will get "visitors" occasionally. Compost tumblers make it hard for rodents and other pests to get into the compost pile since they are enclosed, and the style that are above ground are especially resisitant.

Easy loading/ unloading

The higher mounted compost tumblers are often much easier to unload into a wheelbarrow. Some of the roll around tumblers are easier to load with material as they are low to the ground, but if you dont' dump the material directly into the garden then it will difficult to unload the finished compost.

Esthetics

This is an individual preference. Many gardeners don't mind a open compost pile, but often folks prefer the look of an enclosed bins provide a cleaner look.
