Hypoglycemia is a medical issue that derives from the fact that your body uses glucose as fuel. When you eat carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into sugars, like glucose, which are then used to fuel the muscles and organs in your body, especially the brain. Hypoglycemia is a condition where your body secretes too much insulin and as a result sends your blood sugar too low for your body to perform normal functions.
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is a problem that is much over-looked by many doctors today. Hypoglycemia can be due to alimentary problems, idiopathic causes, fasting, insulinoma, endocrine problems, extrapancreatic causes, hepatic disease, and miscellaneous causes.
Hypoglycemia comes into place when the blood sugar level of a person falls down. There can be number of reasons for this. A better understanding of the cause of hypoglycemia helps in its prevention.
Vitamins B are also very helpful to maintain healthy sugar levels and provide you with great energy. Niacin helps your body to break down sugars. Other B Complex vitamins help to stabilize blood glucose and metabolize blood sugars.
The fasting hypoglycemia is the hypoglycemia that affects people who do not have diabetes. This can be diagnosed through a blood sample, if the results show that the blood glucose level is below 50 mg/dL due to in between meals, overnight fast or and after physical activity, then you have fasting hypoglycemia.
Hypoglycemia can be caused by many different things. Most cases of hypoglycemia will occur in people who have diabetes. If a diabetic has a decreased appetite or skips a meal and does not adjust their insulin or oral diabetic medicine to compensate, they will have a drop in blood sugar. But there are other conditions that can cause hypoglycemia also. Let's look at a few of them.
Hypoglycemia may also occur in sleep. This may happen if a diabetic person takes too much insulin at night, Symptoms of hypoglycemia that may occur in sleep may include nightmares, crying out spells. Sometimes the only finding is to discover your night pants, pajamas, or bed sheet to be wet from perspiration at night. Diabetic patients who experience hypoglycemia during night may be tired, irritable, or confused when they wake up.
The best way to control hypoglycemia is through a diet similar to that used to control diabetes: a reduction in simple sugars, a large intake of complex carbohydrates, and frequent meals. Candy, sodas, and even fruit juices (which manufacturers often sweeten with lots of sugar) all are high in sugar and should be avoided, or only on extreme circumstances, as mentioned above.
Also, people with hypoglycemia may find it best to eat vegetables high in fiber and low sugar fruits such as: berries, plums, apples, pears, peaches and cherries. Also, beans are good for blood sugar and may want to be considered when planning a diet or meal. Eating snacks every few hours that are high in protein may also help keep blood sugar levels where they should be.
