Castle wedding locations exist everywhere….yes, even in the U.S. where we had no kings and queens. Some of these amazing structures and are often available to the public for weddings, corporate events and celebrations.
You will find unique sites are made into comfortable bed and breakfasts with a destination wedding attitude. Others are inns, restaurants and government owned historic landmarks with thousands of acres or splendid gardens. Ancient walls are adorned with family paintings and crests from the knighthood. Most boast of well appointed rooms available for ceremonies and celebrations and some have beautiful chapels.
Historically the chapels were built first and then began the castle walls. They were built for protection from invaders and often found on hill or mountain tops with outer walls, moats, drawbridges, towers, ramparts and private rooms, (chapels), banquet rooms and water wells. Deeds to lands surrounding the properties were given to barons, dukes, earls, princes and some were summer escapes from the unhealthy cities. The people in the area worked the farms or shops and gave the castle and land owners a portion for their protection from marauders. Keeping a military unit, the dukes, princes, etc built these amazing fortresses to show their power and to protect the population.
Popular Renaissance Fairs held worldwide give life to many couple’s goal of seeking a castle for their wedding day. Castles here, and globally find couples traveling to the wedding of their castle dreams.
Because of the expense in keeping a castle in today’s economy, many are now privately owned and the resurrection, repair and promotion of these magnificent locations provides a backdrop of elegance, grandeur and history. Many are advertised with private chapels, unique gardens, ghosts, and extensive views and provide a host of wedding day details. With most, you will find luxury and an extraordinary setting while with others, you may need to tolerate a drafty, cold environment, food you do not like or understand, a complicated language, sounds of creaks and groans from the hallway and a bit of the unusual. If adventure is your game, the castle locations are perfect. Choose according to your taste!
