So you have been thinking about getting a stun gun for awhile now. You've seen a bunch of cool videos on Youtube and you might even have a friend with one. You think they look cool and would be great to keep yourself safe. You made the choice to find one for yourself but you don't know if they are actually legal where you live.
Anyone that plans on getting a stun gun for sale defense needs to know if they are legal where you live. Stun guns have proven to be valuable self defense tools but unfortunately there are several locations where it is illegal to own one. The goal today is to provide you the information you need to know about legally owning a stun gun if you live in the United States.
Like I mentioned there are several states where you legally cannot own a stun gun and on top of that there are some cities where it is legal as well. There are also a couple states where you can own one but there is legal red tape to get through such as getting a permit.
To start off I'll give you the states where you cannot own a stun gun and they are as follows:
Hawaii
Massachusetts
Michigan
New Jersey
New York
Rhode Island
Wisconsin
Here is a list of the cities where stun guns are illegal:
Annapolis, MD
Baltimore, MD
Chicago, IL
Washington DC
Philadelphia, PA
It is pretty straight forward. If you live in any of the locations listed above you will not be able to legally own a stun gun. Those states also carry pretty stiff punishments if you are caught with one. To give you an example of this in Massachusetts if you are charged with possessing a stun gun you can face a fine of up to $1000 and up to 2 years in jail. Stun guns work great for self defense but if you live in one of these areas you are much better off using another alternative.
I also mentioned there are a couple states that have restrictions on owning a stun gun. The list of those states is pretty short and only includes Connecticut and Illinois. If you live in Illinois you must hold a valid FOID card and pass a background check as well as get through a 24 hours waiting period. In Connecticut you must obtain a permit from Mayor or Chief of Police. You may need to be finger printed and have an investigation of your criminal background conducted. If you are a felon you cannot obtain this permit.
As you can see the number of states that limit or ban the use of stun guns is small but it is very important to know this information before trying to get your hands on a stun gun. Like I said, stun guns are a great way to protect yourself but there are also other very effective alternatives if you live in one of the states where it is illegal to own one.
