Install a Driver for a Remote Printer on Your PC

Firstly click Start, then click Control Panel. From there click Printers and Other Hardware, and then Printers and Faxes.

Secondly, double-click on Add Printer option to start your Add Printer Wizard, and click Next.

Thirdly click on to Local printer, clear, automatically detect and install check box, and click Next.

Fourthly click Create a new port, and click Local Port in your Port type section.

Fifthly in the Port Name box, type the path to the printer in this following format, where your server is the name of the print server and the printer is the name of your printer:
\server\printer

Click Next and select your Windows 2000 or Windows XP driver for your printer.

Click Next and follow the instructions to finish the wizard. You can even get more information about it from Internet.
If you have Windows 2000 based computer, you can follow these steps to install your Printer driver locally on a Windows 2000 computer:

First click Start, point to Settings and Printers.

Double-click on Add Printer to start your Add Printer Wizard.

Click on My Computer and click Next.

Click Add Port, then click Local Port, and click New Port.

In your Port Name box, type your path to the printer in the following format, where your server is the name of your print server and the printer is the name of your printer:
\server\printer
- Lastly click OK, and click Close.

Now, you have to remember that while using this procedure, your print job is printed locally and then it is redirected to your network path. When you are using this procedure, you will not receive Printer updates from the print server when you are updating your Printer driver on the print server.
