For the longest time, soaps are among the most used things that we have at home. Since cleanliness is very important for a lot of people, soaps are considered a necessity in our lives. Soaps are basically cleansing agents that are synthesized from fats and oils. We use soaps for a lot of purposes. These are used for taking a bath, washing of the hands, washing clothes, dish washing and a lot more. As long as we want to clean something, soaps are the best option that we have.
Soap making is the process of making the bars of soaps that we use from scratch. This process is called saponification wherein the animal or vegetable fats and oils are mixed with a base to transform it into a salt. These salts of the fatty acids are the soaps that we use for cleaning. Soaps are effective cleansing agents because these trap the dirt and allow it to be washed off by water, together with the soap.
Handmade soaps are the soaps which are made from soap making. These soaps are different from the industrially produced soaps. Since the process is quite different for the two, the products will also have its own set of qualities. Soap making usually involves the use of excess fat, known as superfatting. The purpose of this is to retain the glycerine on the soap enhancing the moisturizing property. Handmade soaps are often more skin-friendly than other kinds of soaps.
Soap making is actually a simple activity to do. There are basically three ways of making soap with their own advantages. First, the melt and pour method is the basic soap making procedure. This involves the use of a pre-made soap base which is melted and poured into the mold. Second, the cold process is done by slightly raising the temperature of the soap enough to liquefy it. Third, the hot-process is done by heating the soap to ensure that the reaction is complete.
Most of the materials of soap making are available in local groceries. You can just get these soap making materials and start working on them. What makes this activity very appealing for the people is the fact that you can personalize your soaps. There are so many additives that you can add to your soap so that you can enjoy using them. You can add color, fragrance, moisturizers, exfoliants and a lot more. Just be creative when it comes to making your soaps.
Soap making is actually fun but as with all good things, you need to take precautionary measures. Handling lye is needs to be done very carefully. These can corrode your skin and other materials needed for soap making. Always be aware of the dangers of lye when making soap. You should be careful everytime your add lye to cold water, mixing the mixture and even pouring it. The mere contact on your skin can really be very dangerous so make sure that you wear gloves all the time.
