For a modest urban settlement, Dessau has got much action taking place, particularly cultural experiences at the Anhalt Theater. It is a town located in the eastern part of Germany, not far away from Berlin (130 km to the west of the capital), and it has a population of no more than 80,000. It appeared in a written letter in 1270, and in the year 1570 it became the district capital of the Principality of Anhalt, maintaining this status until the 20th century.
Weather in Dessau is normal for this latitude which puts the town in the temperate climate, half the distance between the north pole and the Equator. Temperatures differ from -25 degrees centigrade at night in January and 35 centigrade in July during daytime.
Dessau is also the "mother-town" of the well known Bauhaus college. For those of you who are not familiar with Bauhaus, let me say that it's an architectural style, which turned up around the year 1930 and has had many followers in modern architecture throughout the entire Earth. It was a new style of designing edifices which put an end to the old, massive, stone buildings that were made until this point in history. Very spacious, using natural light much better than earlier building types – the Bauhaus was indeed the predecessor of present-day architecture.
There are several buildings made in Bauhaus style, and one example is the Dessau Anhalt Theater, a place that means the world to the city's residents, as well as to the region's towns and villages. Everybody gets together here to admire the marvelous musical plays, theater plays and concerts. It is always cramped of spectators and you'll even see numerous foreigners that decide to go there, which may be surprising for some, but not for the residents of Dessau. They know very well that this is a rare theater in this part Germany, and they don't see it as a strange thing when they see foreigners arriving to Dessau to watch the spectacular theater shows.
The city was almost entirely wiped out by the allied bombers at the end of the second world war, but in the next few years it was rebuilt, and most of the old structures were renovated. Nowadays, Dessau is a mixture of vintage buildings and castles with the new Bauhaus structures. Besides, numerous buildings are added to the UNESCO World Heritage Project, and this is another reason why this city is worth visiting.
Another attractive characteristic of Dessau is that it is considered the greenest town in Germany, with various gardens and green streets, making it great for reposing promenades amongst splendid displays of nature. Visitors who choose Dessau as their travel destination for the vacations are rarely disappointed, for this is indeed a delightful place, a town where you are able to loosen up and have a rest with your family and buddies and forget about the daily problems, at least for a short while. Also, Dessau provides first-class accommodation, and I'm talking about 4 star hotels that, even if they are not designed in Bauhaus style, they still offer the best conditions for the duration of your stay.
If you want to go there for a couple of days and see the Dessau Theater, make sure you book a room at the finest hotel in Dessau!
