UTI or the urinary tract infections is one of the most frequent infections that is occurring in the body. Women are more susceptible to UTI than men but when men catch the infection, most often it is more severe.
Many women suffer from frequent UTIs. Nearly 20 percent of women who have a UTI will have another, and 30 percent of those will have yet another. Of the last group, 80 percent will have recurrences.
In a study that has been conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one factor that could be a reason for recurring urinary tract infections is the ability of the bacteria to attach to the cells that is lining the urinary tract.
UTI may have symptoms or can be asymptomatic or does not have any symptoms at all. Some of the symptoms that an infected person might experience is the uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone especially in women, frequent urge to urinate, painful, burning feeling during urination and might also have an overall feeling of being tired, shaky, or washed out.
UTI can be treated with antibiotics however when a person has fever that is accompanying the infection, hospitalization might be necessary as fever indicates that the infection has already reached the kidney. Aside from these, there are several over the counter medications to help treat the symptoms of a UTI as well.
In addition, there are other steps that can be done to avoid urinary tract infection.
-
Drink plenty of water every day.
-
Urinate when you feel the need; don't resist the urge to urinate.
-
Take showers instead of tub baths.
-
Wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria around the anus from entering the vagina or urethra.
-
Cleanse the genital area before sexual intercourse.
Drinking coconut juice or cranberry juice is also being advised to help prevent UTI.
Given this information on hand, you will be able to learn how to take good care of your health and avoid infections such as the UTI. If you have recurring urinary tract infections, it is best to have your urine analyzed or cultured so as the physician can take appropriate action to solve your health problem.
