It is obvious that you have a car insurance policy if you are driving your own car. But do you really know what you should do in the unfortunate event of a car accident? Check out some steps that you need to take after you have calmed yourself down.

A car accident can unnerve anyone and the tremor that one feels when some untoward incident happens leaves you with shaky hands for some time after the accident too. Not only is the accident an unnerving experience, what follows after that is equally painful too. Submitting a claim to the car insurance company can be a frustrating and nerve racking experience because many car insurance companies just do not have their acts together when it comes to customer service. Some tips that can help you make the experience more tolerable are mentioned below.

  • Start the car insurance claim procedure at the accident site itself. Irrespective of how large or small the accident is, you will need to ensure that the police are called and an accident report is filed.

  • Do not, at any cost, admit that the accident was your mistake. There are times that the police may enter details about the accident and may write that you were responsible. Do not make any comments on your own about whose mistake it was. Your car insurance company can use this information to their advantage.

  • Take a picture of the battered areas of the car. These are required to be deposited along with the car insurance claim that you make. These days, when all of us have camera mobile phones, this has become extremely easy.

  • Take down the names and addresses and phone numbers (if possible) of the witnesses of the accident, especially if it was a bad one and involved another car driver.

  • Make sure that you can your car insurance agent from the location itself and let him know the situation. Even though it is best done immediately, you can contact them later too as long as you have the pictures of the car in an accident.

Taking these immediate steps can keep you from facing hassles when you file in your claims in the car insurance company later.
