Bookmark is Netscape / Mozilla's term for a shortcut link to a website. Internet Explorer calls them "Favorites". When you bookmark a site, your browser places a link to it under the "Bookmark" or "Favorites" menu at the top. For the sake of brevity, we shall be using the term "bookmark" to mean bookmark or favorite site throughout this article.

One way to resolve this problem is to use your web browser's bookmarks feature. Bookmarks are a popular term for the lists of web page links stored in web browsers, although they are called "Favorites" in Internet Explorer. These web browser bookmark systems have some severe limitations. For example, each bookmark list will only be compatible with a specific web browser.

Social Bookmarking is the next step in bookmarking, where you and others can share bookmarks to web sites you think may be of interest to others. This is done via onlinel Bookmarking services. After you have signed up for the Social Bookmarking service, you will be allowed to register a website, site description and tags (keywords) with the service - this is a bookmark. You will also be allowed to share this bookmark, or you can keep it private (depending on the service). This information is stored by the Social Bookmarking service, and is not stored on your computer.

When you list a site in your bookmark list, anyone looking for that same type of information can do a search at the bookmark site and find the sites that you have bookmarked. It is like a search engine without all the trash. When you do a search in a search engine, you get all the sites that have something to do with the keywords you typed into the search box. It is easy to get a bunch of garbage sites that are loaded up with keywords but have poor content on the actual site.

Informative Bookmarks: These bookmarks serve a dual purpose in that they identify a place in the book and provide a place to write notes for further reference. This type of bookmark is used in non-fiction and reference books by people who are studying and are usually made from card stock. When using multiple bookmarks care needs to be exercised to ensure they do not fall out of place when handling the book.

The website that possibly changed all that was Google. Google didn’t want to be just any old junky search engine where spam was more prevalent than actual sites. They wanted people to come back often to their search engine and knew that the way to do that was to make their surfing experience tremendous, and to get them exactly the information that they wanted, as quickly as possible.

The original intention of social bookmarking is to enable you to store websites and pages that you have found and want to refer to later, and also to refer them to others that you think might benefit from them or just enjoy visiting them. You can bookmark any type of web content from articles to blogs to videos, and to start doing so you have first to register with one or more social bookmarking sites.
