Part of what made the brand very popular across the world is its availability as well as its cost. Across the world, many people buy lipton tea as their main refreshment. But have they ever asked where Lipton came?
Brief history of Lipton Tea
The first Lipton tea was created near the end of the 19th century by Sir Thomas Lipton in Glasgow, Scotland where he founded his own enterprise. Eventually, his business as well as his tea brand flourished across Glasgow which led to establishing a number of chains of grocers, first across Glasgow, the rest of Scotland, until finally he had stores throughout Britain.
In 1929, Lipton groceries merged with Home and Colonial Stores to form a food group with over 3,000 stores where people could freely buy buy lipton tea. The new merger were known as Home and Colonial Stores until 1961 when it took the name of Allied Stores. Lipton were one of the largest supermarket chain focused on small towns in that time, before Allied's 1982 acquisition by Argyll Group where it was again rebranded as Presto during the 1980s.
Meanwhile, the Lipton tea business was acquired by consumer goods company Unilever in a number of separate transactions, starting with the purchase of the US and Canadian Lipton business in 1938 and completed in 1972 when Unilever bought the remainder of the global Lipton business. In 1991, Unilever created a first joint venture with PepsiCo, the Pepsi Lipton Partnership, for the marketing of ready to drink (bottled and canned) teas in North America. This was then the start of Lipton's success in the market.
Lipton of Today
Lipton is known today as the dominant tea brand in many markets and that almost all people buy lipton tea in their lifetime. One reason for its continues success in the market was mainly because of Lipton positioning itself in the middle of the price spectrum for tea.
