Recently I heard a quote from the "Miracle on Ice" 1980 USA Hockey team coach Herb Brooks who said, "Great moments are born from great opportunities."
I was thinking about this quote. How often do we allow great moments to pass us by because we think they will come again...only to find out that they don't. We allow opportunities to slip through our fingers.
It's funny if I watch my 5 year old, she doesn't let any opportunity pass her by, she's up for anything. I wonder where do we lose that excitement to jump into something new?
I think too often people have been knocked down by life a time or two (or more) and are afraid of new opportunities that come their way. I talk to people all the time that tell me they want a better life, more money, more time with their kids, yet aren't willing to take any action.
Too many people think that speaking of what they want is the action!
You've heard the saying "Are you going to walk the walk or just talk the talk?" Talking is not doing. Talking is really just the "filler" or the distraction for taking action. We've all worked with people that spend more time talking then doing and it's frustrating! Well, I'll be the first to hold the mirror up to my face and say, "I've done that."
Here's the greatest lesson, when you move from a talker to a doer your world changes around you. You have more time because you've accomplished your goal quicker instead of spending time telling others what you're going to do, you're doing it!
Yes, I've been a doer most of my life. I bought a stick shift car and then learned how to drive it. I moved 1200 miles away within two weeks of the thought of moving. I bought a 51 acre piece of land when others told me I was crazy. I moved into a small cabin in the Colorado mountains without electricity or water because I had a vision of a pioneer life. I ran a marathon of 26.2 miles when I had run no further than 13 at the time. Why? Because I'm a doer.
Are you a doer?
Or a talker?
Do you talk about what you're going to start, yet don't?
So, you're real. You make mistakes as we all do...but when we know better, we do better.
What can you do to move from a talker to a doer?
Simple.
You see, there's this small space of time when you think of doing something and actually doing it. After you think it...
MOVE!
A body in motion, stays in motion. That little space of time can be the killer of the dream. It can be ~~the loss of your exercise you were thinking of doing, ~~the loss of a new client you were going to call, ~~the loss of the business you were planning on starting, ~~the loss of time spent with your children reading together, ~~the loss of a call placed to an old friend.
"Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity." H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
What opportunities are you willing to miss?
