Neck pain causes aching, stiffness, and a burning sensation in the affected area. Pain in the neck is very uncomfortable to deal with, and it can interfere with your ability to be productive throughout the day. This type of pain can also radiate to other parts of the body including the shoulders, arms and head.
There is no one definitive cause of neck pain - it can be brought on by a number of everyday occurrences such as stress, sleep habits, sitting at a desk too long, starting at a computer screen, reading books, poor posture, weak muscles in the midsection, and being overweight.
Age related conditions such as degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, and spinal stenosis can also cause neck pain. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage to slowly deteriorate. And when there is no cartilage to cushion the bones, they rub together and cause spurs that can press on the nerves.
Spinal stenosis causes narrowing of the nerve passageways and can lead to neck pain. Degenerative disc disease causes the discs to dry out and rupture. When discs in the spine rupture, it can press on the nerve roots and cause pain in the neck. Sudden impacts from injuries and falls can also result in a painful neck condition known as whiplash.
Treatment Options for Neck Pain
Massage therapy can be effective at relieving tension and loosening tight muscles in the neck. Massage for neck pain relief can be performed successfully by a licensed masseuse. If you don't have access to a masseuse, you can administer a self massage at home.
Using heat and cold packs simultaneously can offer relief from pain in the neck. Ice reduces inflammation and heat relaxes tight muscles. Heat can increase inflammation, so only apply it to the injured area after inflammation has had a chance to subside. This usually takes 48 hours.
Over the counter NSAIDS can get rid of neck pain quickly. These medications work to reduce inflammation and ease the discomfort of painful conditions. People with underlying health conditions and those who are taking other medications should talk to a doctor before using over the counter drugs to manage neck pain.
Neck Pain Prevention
Everyday situations can cause an enormous amount of wear and tear on the neck, so there is no guarantee you won't experience neck pain at some point in your life. However, there are things you can do to lessen the likelihood of neck pain.
Sleep on a quality mattress and don't use an overly thick pillow under your head when you sleep. These things can place the head and neck under a tremendous amount of strain and result in neck pain.
When you sit down, don't let your neck and shoulders scoot forward, and adjust your computer screen so that it's at eye level to prevent strain on the neck.
Very rarely neck pain can be the result of spinal cord compression, tumors, or spinal infections. So if your neck pain is persistent, or you notice a decrease in muscle or brain function, contact a doctor immediately.
