Domain transfer is when you transfer your existing domain name to a different registrar. Never should this transfer have any changing effect on your email, website or DNS.

Transferring your domain name is typically easy. The basic qualifier is that you already own and operate a domain name and can provide ownership.

When you are ready to transfer your domain, you need to make sure what ever registrar that you choose is a reputable company. Each registrar has their own policy and procedure to help you transfer your domain name. But basically they all are done the same.

There are a few pieces of information you will need to have readily available when you decide your time is right to transfer your domain.

  1. Administrator rights - You will need to make sure you have the right to modify or change

  2. Contact details - Name, email, physical address, phone number

  3. Payment Method - Paying by credit card is often the best form of payment, it’s faster and more secure than by paying by check

Once you have decided you want to make the transfer complete there is one thing that you must make sure of before proceeding. That is, make sure that the current domain name that you currently operate has been in your possession for at least 60 days, and that there are no pending disputes against the name. This is imperative for domain transfer to take place.

At this point is when you should be actually ready to transfer your domain name. Most registrars have a form on their website that you can complete. Many have a "domain transfer" option. Once you have picked this option, you will receive an email asking you to verify that you actually want to transfer your domain name. This email is usually sent to the administrator of your site, this is when you need to make sure you have admin rights. Once you agree that you want to make the transfer, and your request has been validated within 5 days, your domain name is usually transferred with in the next 10 business days.

Many people opt for domain transfers, simply because they do not like the service or quality of service that they are receiving now. Many often feel like they are paying too much money, with all the other service providers offering too many deals that they feel they just can’t pass up.

If you’re in the market to change or transfer your domain name, remember, most companies will offer package deals depending on your needs you may save money by making the transfer. But like any and all other services, you never know what you get till you have made the switch. Transferring a domain name shouldn’t happen often, but when you need to do it, make the switch, but make sure to do your homework before hand.
