Question:

I recently got one Sony HDR-XR200V Camcorder I want to convert the files from m2ts to MKV I have SONY Vegas but MKV Vegas isn't there. I basically want to convert m2ts file into a more common video formats, how to do?

Answer:

Dear, there are three logical possibilities for your reference. The biggest consideration is the software or hardware you're using to watch the movies on.

If you plan on watching the video using software like XBMC, VLC, etc., you should be fine either way; if you plan on using Power DVD, or another Blu-ray player software, you should stick to m2ts.

If you use a stand-alone device like a HTPC, Popcorn Hour or a Western Digital player, you'll probably have better compatibility with the mkv container .here I would like to recommend you to try this m2ts to mkv converter.

M2TS is a Sony high definition video file type. M2TS files are raw AVCHD videos recorded using Sony's camcorders, such as the HDR-SR1 and HDR-SR5 models. Panasonic, Canon and other brands of AVCHD camcorders also record in M2TS format. It is based on the MPEG-2 transport stream container and is also known as BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream. This format is commonly used for high definition video on Blu-ray Disc and AVCHD.

Why need to convert m2ts to mkv?

As we known,m2ts and mkv are both containers; they have no bearing on the amount of compression used.I believe an m2ts taken from a Blu-ray or AVCHD disk is going to be a bit bigger than an mkv with the same contents, because the m2ts contains extra file structure information that you don't need. Additionally, when repacking an m2ts into an mkv, people usually remove any audio streams they don't want. There's no point in keeping a French dub of an American film if you can't speak French. If you want to use a stand-alone device like a HTPC, Popcorn Hour or a Western Digital player, you'll probably have better compatibility with the mkv container.
