Marketing research is one of the most important aspects of marketing any website or product, and it's easy to do online. Instead of having to mail surveys sent out to households, or hold in-person focus groups as was needed in the past, marketing research can be conducted online quickly and easily and without any expense.
Researching Demographics
Researching the needs of the demographic that a product or website appeals to is the first step in conducting online research. Luckily, it's simple to find online groups that discuss just about any special interest topic. Once these sites are found, the marketer can either read through posts and find out what people are talking about or participate in the conversation to learn more.
For example, if a marketer is promoting a website that sells hair accessories, looking at forums that are for teenage girls and mothers can help to define marketing techniques. These sites will have the key demographic discussing what they like and don't like. This can help marketers to discover things they can use in their marketing. Then after reading about women discussing how much they hate fussy bows, a marketer may be inspired to design a new line of simple, streamlined accessories.
Conducting Surveys
It is possible to conduct surveys online to determine how people feel about products and website design. These can be set up as polls in forums, chat rooms and e-mail groups. Many people participate in these simply to be able to voice their opinions. For larger-scale surveys, setting up a survey online with a company, like SurveyMonkey, can be a fast way to get a survey put together and collect long-term results.
Looking at Analytics
Another form of marketing research is finding out how people use the website that is being promoted. Google analytics is one way to discover exactly how long people stay on a website and where they go when they leave. " Are they clicking on affiliate links to leave the site or simply closing the page? " Are people staying for five minutes to read a page or staying for 10 seconds and then leaving? This can help marketers to understand how their site is being used and to focus on what needs to be changed.
To get people to stay longer and to purchase more, being able to both cater to the demographic and understand what they do on the website is important. With marketing research completed, a website can be made far more efficient and effective.
