6 Steps to Finding the Optimal Cage Placement for Your Pet Canary

When you decide where you'll ultimately place your canary's cage, keep the following 6 pointers in mind:

1: Aim for a site that's eye level, roughly six feet off of the ground

2: Placing your canary's cage too low (especially on the ground) can cause a great deal of anxiety for your bird. This is because in the wild, your canary's natural enemy would be predatory birds, which attack from above. Ground placement leaves them prone to danger and

will "stress out" your canary.

3: If you mistakenly place your canary's cage too high, you'll effectively cut them off from humans, making it that much harder to successfully tame your canary or get the used to people.

4: Try to hang the cage, or set it up on a table, that is next to a wall, as having one section of the cage "walled" off will offer additional safety and protection, keeping your bird calm and secure.

5: If you'll be keeping your cage outdoors, remember that wire cages are HIGHLY reflective. Hang it up on a tree or other area that is shaded from direct sunlight and safely away from any potential predators.

6: Finally, it's worth mentioning that if you're going to allow your canary to fly freely throughout the house, you'll need to "canary-proof" practically every single room (and window).

Just as introducing a toddler to your home will quickly expose your danger zones, so too will throwing open the entry to your canary's cage.

Turn off ceiling fans, make sure that all windows are closed (or at least, that the screens are closed and intact), turn off all stove-top burners, minimize the threats of other household pets (think: cat's claws, dogs jaws...) and don't even THINK about using

any non-stick cookware!

Remember, your canary isn't just some goldfish or Beta Fish, a pet that's "here today and gone tomorrow." When properly loved and cared for, your new canary can live to be into their twenties. But they'll never be able to do it without YOUR help!
