Brief History
Founded by the leadership of the Methodist Episcopal Church South that has now become the United Methodist Church as well as the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church that has now been renamed as Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, in the year 1869 basically to train Negro teachers and preachers and fight slavery. Board of Trustees was enlarged from 6 to 19 in 1882 it expanded its membership outside the state of Georgia . A charter of incorporation was granted to the institute in 1883 and classes commenced in rented quarters in downtown Augusta . First 4-years degree course was granted in 1901. It also continued its High School Department up to 1945.
Campus
Though set up in 1869, the college moved to the current campus only in 1886. 57 acre campus of the college is located in Augusta and most of its buildings are located thee. Athletic and gymnasium venues, tennis court, chapel, and music buildings are located in rear campus. Destination address of the campus is 1235 Fifteenth Street , Augusta , GA 30901 .
Unique Features
A full fledged liberal arts college the Paine College offers courses as well as major programs in Education, Natural Science and Mathematics, Business Administration, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Till date the college continues to be small, predominantly black, coeducational and church related schools. Campus tour, residential hall, and self guided tours are some of its unique offers for visitors.
Admission
The college offers facilities of distance learning and online degree. ROTC, study abroad and teacher certification are also offered. Since no open admission is offered, secondary school GPA, ranks, records, college preparation report, SAT and TAC is all important. Dual credit, life experience and advanced placements are accepted for admission credits.
Accreditation
Paine College was accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as a class "B" institution in 1931 and as class "A" institution in 1945. It was also approved by the University Senate of the Methodist Church in 1959 and was made full member of Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1961.
Student Services and Financial Aids
Paine College offers remedial services, academic and career counseling, PT cost defraying employment, career placement, 549 capacity dormitory and on campus library facilities for students. Federal, state, local, and institutional grant aids, scholarships, and student loans are the forms of financial assistance provided.
Paine College offers quality liberal spiritual values in students. At the same time it also endeavors for social responsibility as well as personal development. Predominantly a college for the black it offers online education facilities as well.
