Everyday, on average, 78 people search the internet for "solar whole house fans." Imagine their dismay after 20 or 30 minutes of diligent research when they fail to turn up any information. Although information abounds for solar attic fans and whole house fans there’s nary a word on the elusive solar whole house fan.
Is it extinct? Has it been banned the EPA? No, it’s nothing as dire as that, there’s simply no such thing as a solar whole house fan. But it’s easy to see how one would assume if there’s a solar attic fan, then there surely must be a solar fan for the entire house.
The misunderstanding arises from unfamiliarity with the appropriate use of a whole house fan. In order for a whole house fan to cool down the inside of a house, the temperature outside has to be cooler than the temperature inside. So you’re faced with a major problem; right about the time it starts to cool off outside, your source of free power is starting to dip below the horizon.
But have no fear, if your heart is set on being the first person to own a solar whole house fan I can show you how to put one together.
Since you’re collecting power for nighttime use, a small battery storage system is necessary. This won’t be too expensive – one 40AH (amp hour) AGM battery for $150 and a small charge controller for $31 will do the trick.
Next you’ll need around 250 watts of solar panels costing $1,700 and a wee inverter for $137. All that’s left now is a couple of bucks for wires a few hours of quality time with your roof.
There you have it, solar power for a whole house fan and it’s all yours for the bargain price of $2,000. And of course it would be really helpful to have a whole house fan to hook it up to.
