Cinco de Mayo which in Spanish means "fifth of May" is celebrated with zest in San Diego. It is a celebration of Mexican food, culture, and music. Considering Old Town in San Diego is an ideal place to get a real taste of Mexican culture, cuisine, spirit, and music. No wonder, Old Town is the place where the Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with gusto. Usually most people confuse Cinco de Mayo to be the celebration of Mexican Independence Day. But it celebrates the Battle of Puebla in which the Mexican forces defeated the French Army in 1862 under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.
The event features delicious food, music, handcrafts. In short, it is an amazing celebration of arts, culture and more. This year, Fiesta Cinco de Mayo is going to take place on 1st and 2nd May, 2010. The 27th Annual Fiesta Old Town Cinco De Mayo will be a free two-day fiesta.
The Fiesta has an interesting line-up of lots of entertainment activities for the whole family. Take a stroll down the streets of Old Town and you can hear the sizzling beats of Flamenco, and the traditional Mariachi music. Watching Mariachi players strumming guitar and crooning melodies is a delight. Besides it would be fun to watch uniformed troops re-enact the battle of 1862 of Mexican soldiers against the French with gun blasts. If you want to buy souvenirs or some unique stuff, explore the streets of Mercado in Old Town. You can find lovely jewelery items, handmade leather pieces and lots more. If you are on a San Diego vacation in May, make sure to attend this lively, wholesome entertaining event. Since the Fiesta Cinco de Mayo takes place from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, it is best that you find a hotel in San Diego which is located nearby to Old Town. So that you can easily commute and enjoy the festivities fully.
For a foodie, there are plenty of options to choose from. Restaurants serve authentic Mexican delicacies as well as variety of other mouth-watering cuisines ranging from Japanese, Italian, French and more. Enjoy a refreshing ice cold beer or have tequila shots in the tequila sampling area. Or relish a tequila based cocktail popularly called Margarita. There are so many different cuisines to satisfy your appetite. While gorging on all the delicacies, also spare some time to explore the museums and historic structures Old Town has to offer and let yourself be soaked in history.
