Do you want to change your career
OK, let’s be honest, making a career change is not an easy thing to do. It will require that you invest some time, and probably some money. It’s important to make an informed decision on whether to pursue a change in career or to look at other options such as doing the same thing for someone else, or developing additional skills that will help you develop further in your current career.
Before you decide that a career change is right for you ask yourself the following questions:
Has you life changed?
When you started out in your current career, maybe you were single Long hours, high pressure, lot’s of travel where all exciting and stimulating for you then. Now you have a family that you want to spend more time with. Or maybe the reverse. You started on a career that was suited to family life but now the family has grown up and you want to do something that offers a bit more of a challenge.
A major change in your life can often be a major reason why a career change is right for you
Has the outlook for you career has changed?
When you started out your field was a growing market, expertise was highly sought after and highly rewarded. Now the world has moved on. Perhaps technology has changed, market forces have shifted and the overall economy has changed. Your field is now less in demand and that is restricting your options and perhaps even putting you at risk.
A career change could be a great way to move into a field with more opportunity.
Are you feeling burned out?
Do you now hate doing what you used to love? Do you feel that you have done it all, time and again, and there is nothing new or stimulating in your job? Perhaps you have tried changing employers to add some inspiration and that hasn’t worked?
In that case a change of career into something that will inspire you may be just what you need .
Do you find your work boring?
Maybe you started in a field with lot’s of opportunities for advancement and you have been climbing the career ladder for some time. Now you have climbed as far as you can and you miss the challenges.
A career change could be the best way to provide those challenges for you but it’s also possible that there are other opportunities. Have you really climbed as high up the ladder as you can? Sometimes career advancement options are not always clear and you may have opportunities that you haven't realised.
