Cheerleading is all about energy, spirit and most of all enthusiasm. No other position on cheerleading squads emphasizes that more than the flyer. She is the one flying through the air trying to get the crowd revved up. All eyes are on her and like all great flyers she knows it and loves it.

The position of flyer are at the top of a stunt; the one that gets lifted or thrown in the air. It is easily the most sought-after position in cheerleading in that it offers the thrill and exhilaration of gracefully flying through the air and becoming the center of attention.

Here is a list of some the top ways to becoming the best flyer in cheerleading. By following some of these steps, you’ll soon feel more comfortable in the air than on the ground the next time cheer.

  • Confidence - Attitude and confidence are everything. You need to be confident in yourself as well as your squad mates. Know you can do it and have faith that they can do it. If you don't think you can perform that jump, then you probably won't.

  • Trust - You must trust your teammates and your squad coach. If you completely trust them, you won’t need to worry if you were to fall since one of them will be there to catch you. You can then concentrate on what needs to be done in the air instead of the ground.

  • Stay Tight - Keep your hips and thighs tight together. Don't push out with your legs. Pushing out will spread your bases apart leading to you becoming imbalanced.

  • Air Space – You should ultimately like to have an understanding and feel where the top of the stunt is located. You should also know long you will be in the air for before you start your decent back down towards the ground.

  • Use your Arms – For this one, you should do some arm strengthening exercises prior to build up conditioning. You need be able to hold your own weight. Lift yourself with your arms and help your base squad mates.

  • Balance – You should work on your conditioning beforehand for this as well. It is much harder to hold up someone when they are swaying back and forth or wiggling around. Try to stay as stiff as you can and let your bases help to balance you out.

  • Timing – Here is where the idea of team comes in. The squad should become and perform as a whole. Everyone in a stunt should know what to do and when to do it. Your stunting should be done to a count. The flyer needs to know when the proper level has been reached to stick, hit, or pull the stunt.

  • Lack of Fear – You can’t be afraid of heights and you can’t be afraid of pain. A little pain never hurt anyone and a respect for heights is okay, but you can't be afraid of them.

  • Eye Contact - Maintain eye contact with the crowd. When the flyer is in the air, she should motivate and get the crowd involved with some spirit and enthusiasm.

  • Practice – Practice really is the only way you will get better. No one is ever born a great cheerleader. They spend countless hours in the gym getting ready and work hard at becoming better.

  • Smile – Hey, cheering is fun. Let everyone else know it.
