When I was a kid, I thought that rearing a child was easy. But now it has changed, when I become a father myself of two children, a boy and a girl. I realized both the joys and pains of being their dad. Experiencing the task of changing diapers, waking up early in the morning to fix a bottle of milk, calming a crying child ... are one of those undaunting task provided by a parent to his child.
Everyone knows that disciplining a child is probably the toughest task of being a parent aside from the dilemma to see to it that their children eat the nutritious food they need and educate them the importance of balanced diet and the beneficial contribution to their mental and physical wellbeing and of being healthy.
Providing them the guidance, material things and moral support whenever they need it, is ones parents' responsibility. Before expecting a child to do what he is told to do, parents should observed the following guidelines:
-
Be attentive to your children's needs by allocating enough time for her or him, this way parents will get to know their child better.
-
Building a child's self esteem - Parents should acknowledge any of their child's positive qualities. For example, if the child follows instructions parents should give him or her credit for such gesture. This will help building the child's self confidence, thus, encouraging him to do better.
-
Communicate to your child effectively - The best way to understand a child is to listen to him attentively. Many parents always feel the need to tell the child what he should and should not do. Some parents forget to listen to what their children has to say. When parents don't listen to their children, a gap develops between them. Thus, children tend to disobey their parents. When a child makes mistakes, instead of blaming him or her, parents should clarify and pacify the situation in a cool and calm manner.
4)Lastly, parents should learn how to discipline their children by setting some stringent rules of what is good and acceptable behaviour, live up with them as good example and a role model. Most importantly, institute reward and punishment policy. Let it known to them that there is reward in doing good and punishment of doing bad.
