Those of you who might be new to marketing products and services online are quickly realizing that it is not as easy as it is made out to be. There are so many programs and resources out there that make all of these huge promises, but the reality is that you are not going to make money online, unless you position yourself and set up your business correctly.

By positioning yourself I mean finding a market that is applicable to your knowledge base. Don't go into something blindly and expect to put up a few affiliate links and be successful. Take what you love and know a lot about and turn it into a profitable business.

The second step you must take in positioning yourself is buying the right domain name that describes your business. One of the most commonly overlooked facts about SEO is that if you buy a popular keyword phrase domain name, you will usually get top ten search results for the name that you pick.

What would you type into Google as a consumer?

Think outside the box and instead of getting names that sound good, buy domain names that are going to deliver traffic. Length is not important when selecting a domain name.

Look, if you are building a website that you are going to advertise on bill boards, you will want something short and sweet, but if you are looking at building a business that gets free search engine traffic consisting of customers looking for exactly whatever it is that you are selling, you must pick a domain name that is consistent with the popular keyword phrases in whatever market that you are in.

If you are an expert at building birdhouses and you want to develop an informational product about how to build a birdhouse, think about what you would type in as a consumer looking for a resource about building bird houses. Always stick with the .com names. If your keyword phrase does not have a .com available then move onto another one. Start with howtobuildabirdhouse.com. If that name is not available move onto something similar.

Remember that there are literally billions of word combinations in the English language so you are not going to have a problem finding a great keyword specific domain name as long as you are patient and keep looking for that perfect phrase.

After you find the perfect domain name, you want to build a content based website that is going to deliver traffic. By saying content based, I am not talking about a bunch of RSS feeds. I am talking about original content that fully explains the benefits of the product that you are selling.

You should no by now that marketing products or services online takes work, but once you put forth the effort, the work that you put into it will keep on working for you for years to come. If you are looking to push a button and get rich, you need to find another business. Work an hour a day on your website and you will have a great site in a month. Be patient and keep adding original content. Once your business is successful, copy your success formula and move onto the next website.
