The Truth About Enriched Wheat Flour (White Flour)

Open up your bread box and read the ingredients of your

favorite bread. Chances are the first ingredient is going to be

enriched wheat flour.

What does "enriched" mean?

Enriched flour is flour in which most of the natural vitamins

and minerals have been extracted. This is done in order to give

bread a finer texture, increase shelf life and prevent bugs from

eating it (bugs will die if they attempt to live off it).

Why is enriched flour bad?

When the bran and the germ (the parts of the wheat that contain

vitamins and minerals) are removed, your body absorbs wheat

differently. Instead of being a slow, steady process through

which you get steady bursts of energy, your body breaks down

enriched flour too quickly, flooding the blood stream with too

much sugar at once. Your body then has to work hard to absorb

the excess and stores it as fat. This causes quick highs and

lows in your blood-sugar level which can lead to type-two

diabetes and obesity. All this and you’re not even getting

close to the amount of nutrients that whole grains contain.

Whole grains

Whole grains are richer in dietary fiber, antioxidants, protein

(and in particular the amino acid lysine), dietary minerals

(including magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and selenium), and

vitamins (including niacin, vitamin B6, and vitamin E).

Health benefits

By eating whole grains you reduce the risk of some forms of

cancer, digestive system diseases, coronary heart disease,

diabetes, and obesity.

Don’t be fooled

There are many products that seem healthy on the front but in

reality they are not. If the bread you are buying says “soft

wheat” or “multi-grain” make sure you still read the

ingredients. Most of these breads are primarily made with

enriched flour. Even if the word “enriched” is not there, if it

does not say “whole” then it’s the same junk. Don’t get fooled

by color either. Even if it’s brown, unbleached wheat flour is

still missing the bran and the germ that contain essential

nutrients as well as the fiber that aids digestion.

Look for products that say 100% whole wheat. Trader Joes

carries spaghetti that is 100% whole wheat and tastes great.

Even my father-in-law, Mr. Anti-health, likes it.

I found whole grain rice which is an actually non-raped grain rice with all the original nutrients! It is delicious and can be found in conventional stores. It is called Skinny Rice. Look for it if you eat rice because it is nutritional , whole grain and delicious!

This is a serious conspiracy with this epidemic with flour, proceessed food, and the damn FDA and the corrupted government that allows the FDA to feed us all food that is scientifically proven to cause diabetes, cancer, liver failure, birth defects,I have enough information on all this that the us government would have me assassinated for publishing it all in my own website. Im allergic to chlorine but cant find a way to prove it cause the doctors dont listen to me!! Sincerely, Dave.

I am allergic to malt. Wanted to know if Enriched Flour has Barely Malt in it. Or is the Malt listed separately?

Great article! I have a question, is there anytime it is okay to enriched flour. Like post or pre workout? I have some nutricious snacks that contain enriched flours. I enjoy them for an occatoinal snack. Most of the time I eat very healthy- whole grains. Thank you so much!

Athor does not know what he is talking about! Enriched flour is flour with specific nutrients returned to it that have been lost while it was prepared. According to the FDA, a pound of enriched flour must have the following quantities of nutrients to qualify: 2.9 milligrams of thiamin, 1.8 milligrams of riboflavin, 24 milligrams of niacin, 0.7 milligrams of folic acid, and 20 milligrams of iron. The first four nutrients are B vitamins. Calcium also may be added at a minimum of 960 milligrams per pound. Enriching is necessary because the processing used to make white flour destroys some of these nutrients that originally were present in the whole grain. Bran, which has been removed from whohe flour, is only good sourse of fiber. So if you add another source of fiber to your diet, enriched flour is not worse than whole flour. Be healthy!

I control my type 11 diabetes with diet and keep my blood glucose at an average of 102. Whenever I eat anything with even a little bit of wheat flour in it my blood sugar jumps to 120 to 140

Education on this stuff is good. The food industry is getting us from every direction and you can blame our wonderful goverment for allowing bad info to come about. The sad part is most will not relate our just ignore because of our eating history...but THANKS!! T

FINALLY!- Someone that knows and tells the TRUTH about white flour. I wish I found this out BEFORE I got diabetes. It took my Dr. to tell me about complex grains. Too bad the nations school systems are slowly creating diabetics out of our youth with deep fried white flour and liquid soda sugar. All while NOT informing them of the dangers of UNEDUCATED eating lifestyles. Kinda makes you NOT want to pay taxes.....
