The use of krill oil as a supplement, although not common, is quickly growing in popularity. Basically, the reason for the growing use is due to the fact that this nutritional oil contains plenty of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids and a newly discovered (and powerful) antioxidant called "astaxanthin". These two components are in great demand from those individuals looking to minimize the effects of aging, reduce the probability of getting life threatening diseases, or just looking for another supplement that will help them stay healthy in general.
What Is "Krill"?
Krill are shrimp like crustaceans mostly found in the Antarctic Ocean. It is considered to be the largest source of biomass in the planet. They are eaten by many sea creatures. Whales, the largest mammal on earth, feed mostly on krill to provide them with sufficient energy to sustain their huge bodies.
Some doctors suggest that krill oil may be used instead of fish oil as it is a better supplement. Antarctic krill is thought to be the bedrock species that are depended upon by Antarctic predators for food. These translucent crustaceans swimming in large cluster can actually make the ocean appear pink.
From a nutritional perspective it is considered to be an amazing dietary food source. It has lots of elements like antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E. These components are essential in protecting and maintaining our whole immune system.
Advantages
- The antioxidants provide excellent protection from the harmful
effects of the ultraviolet rays.
-
It is very effective in reducing blood sugar and LDL cholesterol.
-
It is also effective in treating pain and irritations caused by rheumatoid arthritis, and adult ADHD.
-
It increases the memory power, boost the immune system and protect the liver against damage.
-
It is beneficial for people with heart diseases as it control cholesterol
-
It fights against the signs of aging and also gives protection to the cellular membrane. In short, it enhances the overall condition of the skin.
Disadvantages
The one main negative associated with krill oil is that it shouldn't be used by people who are allergic to shellfish. Severe allergic reactions, such as the swelling of the esophagus, can result if these supplements are taken by individuals who have a natural allergy to shellfish. For this reason, it is recommended that people wanting to take advantage of the many benefits of this oil should consult a physician before ingesting any. Most adults are well aware of their shellfish allergy, but if there is any doubt (or if the person taking the supplement is younger than 16) it's better safe than sorry to see a doctor first.
Most of the people have started using krill oil not only because of the overall nutritional supplements it provides, but also for the advantages it has over fish oil. The krill oil doesn't give out unpleasant fishy flavor or burp, which is an added advantage. Also, unlike most fish oils, krill oil contains an effective antioxidant called astaxanthin that can help the body fight off free radicals (and prevent cell damage).
