Digital Wedding Day Blues

Digital photos are one of the best ways to record your wedding day, as digital images are easy to share, alter and duplicate. However they are also easy to loose – at the touch of a button, your entire big day could become one blank screen, never to be seen again.
Digital photos are great for professionals and amateurs, as you can click away as many photos as you like without feeling like you’re ‘wasting’ film. At a later date, you can then select the photos which show you in the best light or capture the real essence of the day. This ability to store multiple photos might also mean that you end up with a lot of digital images stored on your hard drive, rather than safely reproduced and printed in an album.
Whilst wedding insurance can’t stop your computer from malfunctioning or your wedding photos from disappearing off a hard drive, wedding insurance can protect you financially in case such a misfortune does occur.
Wedding insurance will usually pay up to a stated amount to reimburse the cost of re-taking photos. This is usually necessary if the professional photographer contracted for the wedding has lost or damaged the digital media storing your happy memories. Insurance will also help you recover any costs for non-development of the original digital media by a professional. Your insurance will usually only cover any losses incurred before copies are made and it will not usually cover photographs taken by friends or family.
It is your professional photographer’s responsibility to have a good working practise that protects your photographs. When you’re contracting your wedding photographer, you might want to ask them what security measures they have to back up or download images against loss. If you or family members are taking photos, you can take similar precautions, by immediately downloading all images off your camera after the big day. You can then make backup copies on CDs or USB sticks, as well as storing the images on an external hard drive.
Once you have all your images safely stored, you can then copy, email, and adjust your digital photographs to your heart’s content. Even if you do accidentally delete one image or loose your entire collection, you’ll know that you have them backed up in safe place.
