The Ashwagandha herb is abundant primarily in India. The roots of the Ashwagandha bush are used to make an energizing tonic with similar effects as ginseng. It is sometimes referred to as Indian Ginseng.

Ashwagandha is relatively new to the North American alternative health care community, yet it has been used for many thousands of years in India. Much of the research about the benefits and effects of this herbal compound comes from India.

Researchers have found that ashwagandha assists the brain in producing calming neurotransmitters. Just a daily dose of 400 mg. may help to alleviate stress-related headaches, and this happens within about four weeks, on average.

For people who struggle with stress and tension headaches, this is a great benefit. Other known benefits are anxiety reduction, less irritiability and less nervousness. Noticeable health benefits typically occur within about 4-6 weeks.

Compounds found in Ashawagandha can have a calming and soothing effect on the adrenals. In addition, yet another benefit of Ashwagandha is that it will control your levels of the stress hormone cortisol, thus reducing abdomen fat!

There are many more benefits attributed to the ashwagandha root. It is a powerful antioxidant, it enhances immunity, it may act as a natural libido enhancer for both men and women, it can help to control levels of cortisol (stress hormone), it can enhance brain function -- and it has no known side effects.

It should be noted that Ashwagandha is not an herb you can take for a month or so and expect all of the above benefits. It should be taken long term for the full benefits, and can take up to two months before noticing the Ashwagandha benefits.

In addition to capsules and powder, it also comes in a tincture. The recommended dosage for the liquid product is one-half teaspoon to one teaspoon daily. While there are no known side effects for Ashwagandha, check with your doctor before starting this or any new supplement.
