In August of 2007 it was brought to federal court that denture cream poisoning was a growing concern. The plaintiff alleged that a popular denture adhesive was causing neurological damage and was suing the company for malice, gross negligence, and intentional misrepresentation. The plaintiff claimed to have neurological damage, as a result of extensive use of their denture cream. Further more the plaintiff stated that the companies were not representing the products right while marketing them, which is protected under the "Deceptive Trade Practices Act".
The denture cream lawsuit created quite a stir and several thousand consumers stepped forward and have been added to the lawsuit. The biggest complaint of the product is that it causes zinc poisoning. Zinc poisoning can cause several conditions and has several symptoms that can be detected.
Below you will find a listing of these symptoms:
Balance problems
Loss of sensation
Change in walking stride
Difficulty walking
Numbness
Lack of urine output
Tingling in extremities
Unexplained pain
Fever
Chills
Vomiting
Joint Pain
Diarrhea
The average recommended dose of zinc is 11mg to 15mg which is generally obtained in the foods we eat regularly. However according to the Institute for Medicine and Clinical Sciences the highest dose a person has ever ingested without side effects if 40 mg. The FDA doesn't regulate the ingredients found in most denture adhesives and a large amount of zinc is found in one tube of both poligrip and fixodent.
The extensive use of products containing high levels of zinc can cause very serious side effects and damage to your systems including liver damage, kidney damage, digestive damage, and neuropathy generally a common condition of Diabetes. Neuropathy causes a break down in the nervous System leading to loss of feeling in arms & legs. Neuropathy also causes loss of taste and smell. The overdose of zinc can cause a depletion in your copper levels as well adding to the damage to your body. Copper deficiency can cause reduced thyroid function, cardiovascular disease, and loss of function in red blood cell causing anemia. These serious conditions if not treated properly can lead to serious disability and even death.
If you feel you have any of the above symptoms and use either fixodent or poligrip for your dentures on a regular basis contacting your doctor could save your life. Zinc poisoning can be treated if caught early enough. The treatment results are based on how much zinc was ingested, and how soon you seek medical help. It is best to contact the poison control hotline if you have any questions regarding zinc poisoning. Discontinuing the product right way will also save you from additional damage. When visiting the emergency room for zinc poisoning you must be prepared. Providing them with a list of products you use with zinc in them, and how long you have had the symptoms will help them determine what course of action is best to take. Remember no question should be to embarrassing. Asking questions with help both you and them determine what right for your treatment.
