When designing a product it’s important to keep functionality in mind. Drink coasters are inherently functional pieces, created to serve a purpose, and as such it is vital that they carry out their reason for being in an efficient and sensible manner. Different types of materials will have different effects when contacted by moisture or sharp edges, and as such it is important to understand what you are buying when you go out to select a set of coasters.

First off, size and shape will play an important factor. Bigger coasters should be used if you have larger glasses, smaller ones should be used if space is an issue. In general smaller coasters will be more appropriate for a party while larger ones can be set in a certain place in the home, and used over and over again by anyone who frequents that area. One good example w2ould be setting an oversized coaster next to an arm chair by the TV so that a large beer mug could be set upon the piece when the media center is being enjoyed.

Shape is of course a stylistic choice. Round coasters look a little more modern, while square ones tend to have a more classic and or rustic appeal. Of course this can change if you get into oriental styles or traditions, or if you use post modern sensibilities in your home.

The material is also very important in drink coasters. Something like sandstone will absorb moisture, while glass or steel will not. Paper and cork also tend to absorb, but they are usually temporary pieces that will end up flecking off and falling apart. Sometimes non absorbent materials such as wood or marble can be carved with a lip that will hold the moisture rather than absorbing it, allowing you to clean the pieces later.

Of course the long term reliability of beverage coasters is important too. Granite and slate coasters tend to stand up to the test of time, while marble and glass pieces will eventually chip from continued use. Wooden pieces are usually treated to stand up against harsh elements, but will sometimes eventually warp with time. Understanding the nature of the material and the style of the design is vital to understanding the way your coasters will work.
