10 Ways to Support Your Husband
During a Layoff
No doubt about it, one of the most stressful experiences a married couple can ever go through together is a layoff, especially if it is the husband who experiences a job loss. A woman’s primary need is security, while a man’s primary need is respect. Listed below are 10 ways a woman can help her husband maintain his dignity and self-worth, while maintaining her own sense of peace.
-
Pray for Him! Prayer moves the heart of God, and praying for your husband is the number one way you can be a blessing to him. If you can afford it, buy a devotional book for couples and spend time together in prayer each morning.
-
Join an unemployment ministry together, if you’re able to attend with him. Some ministries offer support groups for the spouses of those who are laid off, which would be beneficial for you.
-
Join a spousal support group, if possible. By getting your own emotional needs met, you’ll be better equipped to help your husband with your tank full.
-
Speak highly of him at all times, especially when he’s within earshot of you. Let others know – and let him know – how proud you are of him and how proud you are to be his wife, whether he’s got a job or not. Get him in front of you, knee-to-knee, take his hands into yours, make eye contact, and remind him of all the reasons you married him, and that you’re in this together for the long haul.
-
Express gratitude to your husband – and for him – for who he is and not what he provides. Thank your husband for all he’s done for you and acknowledge how hard he is working to look for a new position. Reassure him that you’re willing to relocate, if necessary, and that you will support him in whatever decisions he makes (providing they’re in line with God’s Word). If you’re not already working outside the home, offer to look for a full- or part-time job to help make ends meet.
-
Have playtimes with your husband as his friend and companion, participating in whatever hobbies he enjoys. Help him find ways to relax and get a change of scenery on a regular basis, whether through taking a walk together, riding bikes, going for a drive. Don’t force him to talk – just let him … be.
-
Show him you trust him to be actively looking for work, by not getting on his case about it. Pray and trust God to deal with your husband, if he disengages or spends all day channel surfing.
-
Find ways that he can help you around the house and/or garage that will give him a sense of accomplishment.
-
Make a promise to stop unnecessary spending. Clip coupons and express enthusiasm for the creative ways you’re able to save money together.
-
Last but definitely not least, give him plenty of physical affection. Now more than ever, your husband needs to feel wanted, needed and desired in every way. Even if he lets his appearance go, continue making yourself attractive – and available – to him.
