In the 1890s, the word "Tango" first appeared connoting a specific dance. It is now generally believed to have been used in the old "Candombes", or religious festivals, held by the descendants of Black slaves. During these festivals (Candombes), there was much dancing to the rhythm of the 'Tang" drums, and curiously, participants used the word 'Tang' for almost everything, -the dance itself, the drums used, and even the places where these religious rituals were carried out.
