What’s actually the sniper’s job?

When we mention the word "sniper" most of us think of the sniper games, like the famous Counter Strike, or some movie with a lonely ranger who is mysterious, very focused and precise, works alone with his guns that point with red light, like the guy in the movie Shooter.
According to the definition "sniper" is a highly trained soldier who specializes in shooting targets with modified rifles from incredibly long distances. They are also well trained when it’s about stealth, camouflage, infiltration, and observation techniques. And even if the most people think that their job is to "pull the trigger", actually in reality the true snipers work for the military and law enforcement agencies. They are far more concerned with the number of lives they save than with the ones they take.
Sniper's primary mission is reconnaissance. These soldiers are masters of stealth and they are perfectly adequate to sneak behind enemy lines. They provide command with information about the enemy's size, strength and location and concentrate their attention to the key figures from the enemies, like officers, pilots, armour drivers, technicians, and communications operators. Snipers shoot without warning and that’s how they break both the enemy's will.
If there’s no specific objective, a sniper looks for, so called, targets of opportunity. They track the movements of the enemies and wait patiently some of the soldiers to take a break or to be unprepared to defend or hit back - a pilot flight that checks his helicopter, officer taking a break to smoke a cigarette, an armed guard on patrol…
Sniper’s targets are not only people. They often have to destroy material targets like generators, transmitters, radios, fuel and water supplies, etc.
Snipers are also used in support roles which are based on taking a place that has a clear view of the battlefield, maybe setting up on a roof, and supporting the assault force by taking out enemy forces that are endangering the advancing platoon or help ground forces defend their position.
Military strategists refer to the snipers as force multipliers that means an individual or small team that uses special tactics. With that they can do the damage of a much larger force and they are capable of force multiplication without ever directly engaging the enemy.
These soldiers move discreetly, under the cover of brush or night, taking with them very little gear. Often need to stay completely still for hours or days, waiting for the right moment to take the shot, but to avoid detection at the same time. It may seem surprising, but they never travel alone.
