Nutritional Supplements For Fibromyalgia Syndrome

Fibromyalgia is a rheumatic disorder - a condition with unknown causes and no known cure. The primary symptoms are chronic flu-like pain in the muscles, joints, tendons and/or ligaments described as burning, shooting, stabbing and throbbing. Often accompanied by disturbed sleep patterns, insomnia and fatigue.
Other symptoms include anxiety, depression, chronic headache, dizziness, impaired co-ordination, irritable bowel syndrome, swollen joints, swollen lymph nodes, irritable bladder, palpitations, memory impairment, numbness or a tingling sensation, restless legs syndrome, skin sensitivities, dry eyes and mouth, difficulty with swallowing, frequent changes in eyeglass prescription, stress related disorders, premenstrual syndrome and painful periods.
The most distinctive feature of a diagnosis involves the existence of certain tender points. There are nine pairs of specific spots where the muscles are abnormally tender to the touch:

Around the lower vertebra of the neck.

At the insertion of the second rib.
-
Around the upper part of the thigh bone.
-
In the middle of the knee joint.
-
In muscles connected to the base of the skull.
-
In muscles of the neck and upper back.
-
In muscles of the mid-back.
-
On the side of the elbow.
-
In the upper and outer muscles of the buttocks.
This disorder is much more common in females than males and more often than not, begins in young adulthood.
Possible Causes Of Fibromyalgia:
Some evidence points to a problem with the immune system due to certain immunologic abnormalities that are common among people with fibromyalgia.
A disturbance in brain chemistry may also be involved. Many who develop this disorder have a history of clinical depression.
Other possible causes that have been proposed include anemia, infection with Epstein-Barr virus, Candida albicans, chronic mercury poisoning (from amalgam dental fillings), parasites, hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia. In addition, because this disorder tends to run in families, researchers also suspect that there is a hereditary component.
Most people who have this disorder have chronically low levels of the hormone serotonin. This deficiency causes sleep problems as well as more sensitivity to pain.
A magnesium deficiency is also associated with fibromyalgia. Stress makes the pain worse, and low-impact exercise is recommended to help ease symptoms.
Because mal-absorption problems are common in those with this disorder, higher than normal doses of all supplemental nutrients are needed.
Nutritional Supplements:
Vitamins A and E are both free radical scavengers that protect the body's cells (antioxidants) and enhance immune function. Use emulsion forms for easier assimilation. Take 25,000 IU of vitamin A daily for one month then slowly decrease to 10,000 IU daily. Take 800 IU of vitamin E daily for one month then slowly decrease to 400 IU daily.
Vitamin C with bioflavonoids has a powerful antiviral effect and increases the body's energy level. Take 5,000 to 10,000 milligrams daily.
SAMe has been found to help ease joint pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia. Studies have found SAMe to produce excellent results in reducing both the number of trigger points and improve overall mood. Take up to 500 milligram capsules daily.
Coenzyme Q10 enhances the effectiveness of the immune system, improves oxygenation of tissues and protects the heart. Take 75 milligrams daily.
Lecithin enhances immunity, aids in brain function, improves circulation and promotes energy. Take as directed on label.
Free-form amino acid complex, containing all the essential amino acids, supplies protein essential for repair and rebuilding of muscle tissue and for proper brain function. Take as directed on label.
Calcium and magnesium. Calcium is needed to balance with magnesium. Take 2000 milligrams daily. Magnesium is needed for proper functioning of all muscles, relieves muscle spasms and pain, helps burn fat and produce energy. Take 1000 milligrams daily.
5-HTP is converted by the body into serotonin. Take 50 to 100 milligrams three times daily.
Herbal Supplements:
Astragalus and echinacea enhances immune system function.
Black walnut aids in removing parasites.
Cayenne (capsaicin) relieves pain. Topically apply a lotion containing .025 to .075% capsaicin to affected area. Cayenne can also be taken orally in capsule form.
Garlic promotes immune function, increases energy and destroys common parasites. Take 2 capsules 3 times daily with meals.
Ginkgo biloba improves brain function and circulation. Caution: It may increase the effect of blood thinning drugs.
Grape seed extract is a powerful antioxidant that enhances immunity and protects the muscles from free radical damage. Take as directed on label.
Licorice root supports the glandular system. Caution: Do not use on a daily basis for more than 7 days in a row. If you have high blood pressure - AVOID IT ALTOGETHER.
Pau d'arco as tablet form or herbal tea is good for treating Candida infection.
The herbs skullcap and valerian root are used for anxiety, headaches and insomnia.
St. Johns Wort is used to treat depression and works with 5-HTP and magnesium to boost serotonin levels. Take 300 milligrams 3 times daily.
Herbal teas brewed of burdock root, dandelion and red clover enhance immune function and promote healing by cleansing the blood stream. You can combine or alternate these herbal teas. Drink 4 to 6 cups daily.
