Library as the word suggests is a large collection annexe. In this case, the title clearly indicates the collection of music in particular. Music libraries consist of collections for patrons(members) as well as non-print materials like audio recordings or digitized music scores. However, in todays world music libraries are no longer merely conventional libraries but also perform tasks like licensing their collections of music to movies, television and radio productions.
The natural question that comes to mind is what music licensing is, and the anwer to this question is that licensing one's own copyrighted music to be used by others in relevant areas is the activity of a music licensing company.
The next query would definitely involve the purpose of approaching a music licensing company. The purpose of such a procedure is to safeguard the interests of individual composers, so that they are not exploited. It is obvious that a composer would like to market his or her composition in the highest revenue generating pattern possible. It not only helps the composer financially but also socially as it gives the composer the due recognition.
Next comes the 'how' factor. That is how to go about it, but before that one also needs to know the rules related to music licensing. Unlike composers who have a tie up with music publishing companies, independent artists need to get their compositions enlisted with the US copyright office by a music licensing company. Generally there are two copyrights, one for the sound recording (Form SR),and the other being for the underlying song(Form PA).The license for sound recording is the Master Use License, and that of the underlying song is Synchronization license used in case of TV shows and films.
Having completed the basics one would now look for further details. It is now that one needs to do some serious research about the ongoing show and films that will help one to decide what to opt for and its relevance as per one's composition is concerned. After that the next step is to make a CD containing the tracks that one intends to send, with contact details, genre of music and its targeted relevance to the show or films. Bios, photos and reviews are a strict no, as they will be of no help. Now that the first step is complete, one needs to build contacts with music supervisors, music publishers by going to film festivals where such big shots arrive and independent small budget film producers would give a good start.
The process of music licensing then involves approaching the music supervisors, who also keep a look out for independent composers, as independent new comers usually agree to license for lesser amounts. Knowing the cardinals of licensing gives an edge over the others, as they become easy to work with.
The final step of music licensing is to now prudently close a deal, once it has been bagged. The best possible way is to be accompanied by a person who is aware of the legalities of music licencing. One should take into account the scope the deal provides and the money got. Negotiations should not be influenced by budgets stated, rather the exposure should be taken into account. This helps in deciding whether the deal is worth it or not. Any deal that tends to curtail or control the originality and ownership should be strictly avoided.
Last but not the least one must not forget that quality stuff has never been out of demand and one should thereby seek maximum profit from getting one's music licensed by a music licensing company.
