LEARN THE MAGIC SENTENCE EMPLOYERS CANNOT IGNORE
The purpose of this article is to provide you with a few effective tips to writing a great cover letter and hopefully set you apart from he crowd.
TIP #1: Add a heading
Rather than starting out with the typical, "Dear Mr/Mrs So-and-so," followed by the opening paragraph - insert a bold-faced AND centered heading just after the greeting. Here's an example:
Dear Mr. Jones:
I am confident that I will be a valuable asset to your organization as I possess massive initiative, a winning attitude, and the drive to put forth the extra effort to stand apart from the crowd.
[opening paragraph]
NOTE: I may have been unable to center this heading in this article; however, you would want to center the heading in your actual cover letter.
Obviously, you can change to wording to your liking. The point is, this grabs the attention of the reader, illustrates that you are willing to put forth the extra effort, and DOES help you stand out in the crowd.
TIP #2: Ask for an interview
Remember, your goal is to get an interview. Just writing about your accomplishments, how you would be an ideal fit, etc., etc., etc,. is nice, but you have to state your objective and ask the reader to take some sort of action. This is exactly what advertisers do - and it works. After you have "set the stage," try putting this in your letter:
"Please contact me to set up an interview. I would love to meet in person and discuss in detail, how I would contribute to your organizational goals...." [notice I bolded "contact me"]
Again, most people don't do this, so you are setting yourself apart, illustrating that you are a "go-getter," and willing to do more the average applicant.
TIP #3: The MAGIC Sentence
FACT: There's ONE highly studied and PROVEN sentence that is found in less than .001% of cover letters, yet it is the most influential statement you can make to get the interview. Unemployment rates are soaring and employers are overwhelmed with job applicants. Experts advise, that when the job market crashes, your cover letter becomes the most important document in your application packet. In a recent study, over 95% of human resource departments admitted that if they're not "blown-away" by your cover letter, they don't even bother looking at your resume.
While this may seem harsh, the fact is, one job opening can literally have HUNDREDS of applicants. You have to use the right format, exact sentence structure, key phrases, "provoking" words, and most of all, the secret sentence. Without these key elements, you don't stand a chance. Want to see cover letters that are PROVEN to work?
Fail to do a little extra in your cover letter, and you can just about guarantee it will get lost in the - do not interview file (AKA Trash).
Good luck with you job hunt, and think outside of the box.
