Hip replacement surgery is a costly and intensive procedure. Those that have gone through it have no desire to do so again, but a recent hip replacement recall has caused hundreds of patients to face the possibility if not the reality of just that. In 2008 DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, ordered a massive recall of two of its ASR hip replacement devices. In the interim, many individual and class action lawsuits have arisen or are currently being reviewed by personal injury lawyers representing affected parties. Two of DePuy’s hip replacement systems, the ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems and the ASR XL Acetubular Systems, are at the center of the recall. Doctors installing these systems, introduced in 2003, found that they had an unacceptably high of failure than the industry standard. Studies revealed that as many as one in eight patients receiving one of DePuy’s ASR systems were experiencing failure of one kind or another, more than twice the industry standard. These numbers were alarming to DePuy, which decided to recall both systems from the market.

In many cases these systems became loose or dislocated, causing many experts to question whether or not these systems were designed too shallow. In other cases metal particles actually flaked off of the device and found its way into surrounding tissues, leading to many cases of inflammation and extreme pain. The upshot of all of this is that according to the F.D.A. there have been several hundred complaints since 2008. Furthermore, the majority of these patients had to go under the knife once again for yet another painful hip replacement.

The costs of going through another such procedure both literally and figuratively are off the charts, and those put in this position due to faulty equipment must have recourse. Luckily they do, in the form of individual and class action lawsuits that have been or are in the process of being filed against DePuy Orthopaedics. The experienced national medical device recall personal injury lawyers of Nadrich and Cohen, LLP and their partners are investigating and representing hundreds of DePuy victims nationally, and can help you.
