Any honest advice on self employment ideas will suggest plenty of research before committing to a new business endeavor. Many beginners may have no idea how to go about researching prospective opportunities on the internet. So, a great deal of time has been invested looking-over the multitude of self employment ideas available online, and the choices have been narrowed-down to a couple of concepts that seem to match one’s skill-set. The next step is to determine the legitimacy of the individuals or organizations that are connected with the implementation of our potential business plans.

One simple way to get a lot of information on business owners, officers, or about the company itself is to type in a search on google. It is amazing how much information comes-up. Typing the word scam after a company’s name when doing a search will also uncover a wealth of information. Be careful though, much of the positive information and reviews that appear are from individuals who are marketing products provided by the company in question. This is not necessarily bad, but it would indicate that more research is needed. Another excellent source when researching self employment ideas are forums.

Forums are vital to online success. This is where expert advice and suggestions can be found at absolutely no charge, and the internet is populated with hundreds of forums on many subjects. Just type in forum after a company or business owner’s name to find them. Again, beware, many of the individuals taking part in the discussions are promoting products themselves. That being said, I cannot recommend becoming a member of relevant forums enough. It is probably the best free tool out there for building a new business. If a serious investment is going to be made, a background check may be warranted.

A background check is not free, but the money spent for one may be well worth it when one considers the amount of time and money that can be spent on certain business start-ups. Imagine the relief if a company owner or officer’s criminal background was uncovered prior to making any investment. Proper due diligence is especially necessary before purchasing a franchise.

As a former franchise owner, I cannot stress enough the importance of thoroughly investigating the company before making a purchase. The individual pitching the business makes his or her living selling franchises. Fortunately, there are strict laws governing franchise sales in the United States. A franchise disclosure document or FDD is required by law prior to any sale. The franchisor must disclose everything about the business, including parent companies, lawsuits, bankruptcies, etc. Read this document very carefully. Finally, just take-in as much information about a prospective business idea as possible.

It is kind of funny how most of us blow right past the policies and procedures page of a document when we are doing business with another company. The P&Ps give us the terms that we will be held to by that company. They are literally the rules that we will be forced to play-by. Imagine playing a game without knowing the rules. I can certainly tell who is going to lose. This, in a nutshell, illustrates the need for doing research when considering self employment ideas.
