Surgical Technologist Occupational Functions and Daily Duties

Anyone who is already receiving a surgical technologist salary know that getting into this profession is no walk in the park. Only those who are completely dedicated, determined and invested into succeeding will be able to turn their goals and aspirations into reality when it comes to this occupation. Individuals that are trying to receive a surgical technologist salary will have to go through a formal program that can last anywhere from 9 to 24 months where graduates are awarded with an associate's degree, certificate or diploma in which they can use to look for employment opportunities. These training programs can be found just about everywhere including hospitals, vocational institutions, junior or community colleges, universities as well as the military.
Performing the daily obligations that surgical technicians have is quite difficult and demanding. They have tons of individual tasks that they are accountable for which are dispersed into three phases and combined to create patient and surgical care management. The first phase is preoperative case management which these employees have to organize the operating room, assist the surgical team while they come into the sterile field and gather all of the necessary tools. The second phase is intraoperative case management where surgical techs are given duties that include setting up trays, taking care of specimens, aiding with suturing, assisting with dressings, getting together medication and handing instruments to attending surgeons. The third and final phase is postoperative case management in which professionals are obligated to remove all used instruments, maintain equipment and preserve the sterile field until the patient has been transported out of the operating room.
Being successful and capable of performing all duties and obligations in this occupation is extremely challenging, difficult and demanding. An individual needs to be able to anticipate the needs of their attending surgeon and provide them with tools and assistance before they even have a chance to ask. Surgical technologists need to work with amazing accuracy, incredible speed and great concentration if they are going to be succeeding and excelling in this occupation. These employees also need to stand on their feet for anywhere from 8 to 16 hours a day while focusing on complex and detailed procedures. All in all, only those who consistently put time, effort and patience into their duties and work will have a rewarding and gratifying surgical technician career.
