Okay so you are a beginner and you want to work on guitar notes for beginners. Where do you start when technically the same note at the same pitch can be played in a variety of places on different strings at different frets.
Make it simple and start with a pentatonic scale relative to the key you are playing in. For the purpose of this lesson I am going to assume you are playing a song in the key of G. Using the following chords G C and D. The pentatonic scale is as per the diagram below:
--0------3
--0------3
--0---2
--0---2
--0---2
--0------3
Each line corresponds to the six strings of the guitar. The bottom string is the base string and the 0 means that there is no finger on the fret. The 3 then means that you finger the 3rd fret from the top - simple.
Likewise the second string from the bottom starts out open and then you finger the second fret and so on. You are now in a position to practise these finger exercises.
Okay so assuming you have a mic attached to your pc go get a copy of audacity . Install it and record yourself playing 4 bars of G 2 bars of C 2 bar of G 1 bar of D 1 bar of C 1 bar of G I bar of D . You can now even make it into a loop.
With this sequence of chords playing in the background play any of the notes from the diagram above. Do this for an hour or so and you will find yourself making up your own tunes to the chord sequence as well as memorising the penatonic scale.
But most importantly you are developing your finger memory so that you'll effortlessly master the guitar notes for beginners in the key of G.
John Tribe has got 30 years of guitar experience and has got numerous students on the road to success.
