Domain names could arguably be the most important web related items on the internet, and with good reason. Without domain names it would be utterly impossible to search the web. We would essentially be forced to remember long IP addressed and filenames in order to navigate to our favorite sites, and let's be honest, no one wants to say: "Hey, did you check out 68.253.28.21 yesterday?". That being said, finding a domain name for your website is very important, even if you have to stick with free domains.

If you currently have any domain names and you are looking to transfer one to a different registrar, you might have a few reasons for doing so. First of all, there may be another domain registrar offering a lower price, or perhaps they have features you like better. Some features might include support for advanced scripting languages or even graphical editing tools.

If there is no reason to transfer then you should probably stick with your current domain registrar, but if you have your mind set on this move, then there are a few things that you will need to do to ensure you are ready. First of all, is your domain name registrar a reseller by any chance? This will make it a bit easier, and if you stay with the same company the reseller works for, then you should be able to experience a seamless transfer.

Another thing to check is whether or not the contact information associated with your domain names is accurate. You will need to approve the transfer, and you will need to be able to prove that you are the one requesting the transfer. If your contact information is outdated, then you simply will not be able to proceed with the transfer, and this can become a rather serious problem.

When you reach the stage in which you are ready to make the transfer, you need to plan it for a time in which your traffic is at a minimum. You are going to have some downtime, and this is just an unfortunate fact you will need to deal with. It is important for you to inform your customers, and ensure you have an ETA for the site's reappearance. If you fail to tell your customers they may assume the worst when they visit your site, and they may very well flock to your competitors. This is certainly not a scenario that you want to experience!

As you can see, this is once decision that you will need to prepare for, and you will need to be ready for all of the potential consequences. That's not to say that it is a bad decision, but it can become a very complicated one. Perhaps you're wanting to take advantage of better prices, or maybe you simply want to experience better features. In some cases you may find yourself switching simply because your current domain registrar is failing. No matter what your reason for switching, you need to be prepared, and you need to be ready to abide by a new set of rules. Making this change is never easy, and hopefully you only have to do it once!
