Oadby is a town in the English county of Leicestershire that has a strong association with the rock group Queen that achieved major success during the nineteen seventies and the nineteen eighties.

The bass player from the rock group Queen, John Deacon, was born in Oadby in the year 1951 and lived in the town when he was a young boy. The parents of John Deacon are reported to still live in the town today. Oadby is also the home of the parents of another member of Queen, the drummer Roger Taylor. Roger Taylor's parents have lived in Oadby for many years.

Like many children, John Deacon was given musical instruments. He got his first guitar at the age of seven at a birthday party in Oadby. It was a Tommy Steele style creation, in the style of the guitars used by the popular music star of the time. Tommy Steele is considered by many people to be Britain's first teen idol and Rock and Roll star, who started off playing Skiffle and then graduated to Rock and Roll after hearing the music of Buddy Holly for the first time.

In the year 1962 when John Deacon was eleven years old he had saved up enough money that he had earned on his paper round to be able to buy a proper acoustic guitar. He started teaching himself chords by listening to pop records and pop radio stations. He formed a band with some local Oadby lads and they used to play in a garage in Oadby that was part of the house of one of the members of the band. His friends at that time called him 'Deaks'.

In the year 1965 when John Deacon was fourteen years old he formed his first band called The Opposition. John Deacon played rhythm guitar in the band. In the year 1966 the bass player decided to leave the band, and John Deacon bought himself a bass guitar and became the bass player. He took to the bass immediately, and many people commented that John Deacon was the best musician in the band.

In the year 1969 when John Deacon was eighteen years old he put his bass guitar away and moved to Chelsea College in London to study electrical engineering. However he soon realized that he could not resist the lure of playing the bass, and brought his bass guitar and amplifier with him to London after one of his visits home to Oadby.

In the year 1971 when John Deacon was nineteen years old he came across some fellow students who were thinking of starting a rock group called Queen. They were looking for a bass player and the rest, as they say, is history.

John Deacon has certainly done well in his career since those early days strumming his plastic guitar on his seventh birthday at his home in Oadby. He has been part of one of the greatest rock groups in the world, and his fortune is reportedly worth around fifty million pounds.
