Heart disease is serious condition that may be hard to treat if you don't know the proper way to lower cholesterol levels. Cardiovascular problems like coronary artery disease can instantly lead to a long list of other complications if you don't find proper treatments and change your bad habits. A lifestyle change is often essential to effectively manage any serious health problem and avoid complications.
There are numerous things you can do to lower cholesterol levels. The first step you should take is to assess your lifestyle and recognize health risks which you can manage, if not completely eliminate.
Proper Stress Management
Stress can weaken even the healthiest heart. With proper management, you will be able to avoid health conditions caused by a stressful lifestyle. If you are stressed at work, taking a few minutes off your work and following proper breathing can help relax your tensed nerves, bring oxygen to your brain and make you think more clearly.
Stretching is also a good way of dealing with stress, especially if you spend time in front of the computer the whole day. Have a few minutes away from your computer to rest your tired eyes and move your body and limbs.
Aside from proper stress management, you can take care of your heart by eating foods which help to lower cholesterol levels.
Diet for a Healthy Heart
Choose the Right Kind of Fats
Fat is not always bad for your body. Some fats are essential. There are some types of fat you can take that won't further increase your cholesterol levels. Choose olive oil, trans fat-free margarine and margarine that helps lower cholesterol when preparing and cooking your food. Avoid butter, gravy, cream sauce, coconut and palm oil.
Protein Options Low on Fat
One of the most common misconceptions about a diet for a healthy heart is that you need to completely avoid meat. You can take a few servings of protein everyday provided you choose a source of protein that is low on fat. Some protein sources you should include in your diet are lean meat, fish, low-fat dairy products and poultry without the skin. Soybeans and products made of soy like tofu are good sources of protein which are low in fat. You should avoid organ meats, full-fat milk, cold cuts, spare-ribs, bacon, hot dogs, sausages and frankfurters.
Not All Fruits and Vegetables Are Good
Another misconception people have about a healthy diet is that all types of vegetables and fruits are good for you. When choosing fruits and vegetables make sure you choose fresh ones. Canned fruits, fried vegetables and those prepared with cream sauces are high in fat and not good for you. If you don't have any choice and must buy commercially packed foods, make sure you choose canned vegetables which are low in sodium, and fruits packed in water or juice. Avoid buying products which are chemically preserved.
Go For Whole Grains
Whole wheat bread, oatmeal and ground flaxseed are low in cholesterol and rich in fiber. Have ample amounts of these food types in your diet. Avoid corn bread, doughnuts, granola bars and white bread.
You can effectively lower cholesterol levels by following a proper diet and knowing how to manage stress. By living a healthy lifestyle, you are reducing your risk of developing heart problems.
