So you've finally graduated school and have that degree. Now its time to find a real job, but where do you start? Finding a job can be a daunting task, especially if you've never done it before. Today's job market is extremely competitive and it requires that you be prepared and professional.
First, you want to make sure you have the qualifications required for the jobs you are applying for. Full and part-time jobs all have certain education and experience requirements. Don't waste the employers' time or your own time by applying for jobs you know you aren't even remotely qualified for.
Second, unlike a few years ago, job hunters must now use multiple avenues to find a job. It used to be that you looked for jobs in the classified section of the newspaper and sent a resume in response to a job. Then along came the Internet. Today candidates need to use all of the resources available to them. Reach out in new, innovative and unconventional ways with social media, video and in-person networking.
A job search can be hard work. Devise a system to track where your resume goes across the different platforms that you use in your job search. Urban Interns helps you keep track of resumes you send through our website. You want to avoid a company receiving multiple resumes from you. At the very least, this makes you appear unorganized.
As the economy recovers and the job market continues to bounce back, job seekers will need to be diligent and strong in their job search. Rejection can be difficult, but don't take it personally. Of course you always want to be the one to get the job, but in many cases these days it simply means that they found a better candidate than you. The candidate may have been over-qualified, but with competition being what it is, many people are taking what they can get rather than waiting for what they really want.
It is also a good idea during your job search to seek out activities and organizations where you can donate your time and talent. Rather than sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring, get out there and get involved. There are all types of organizations that need help with marketing, sales, events, office duties, IT, accounting, and so much more. Volunteering is a great way to hone your skills, make new contacts and keep yourself productive and busy during your job search. Many business and community leaders work with volunteer organizations. You never know who you might meet and impress along the way.
Whether you are in the market for a sales job, an office job, a marketing job, or an IT job, you will need to be organized and diligent in today's job market. Don't be afraid to try new things and get involved to set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd. Be organized, persistent and professional and your efforts are sure to pay off with a job you love!
Urban Interns is an online job marketplace that connects high-growth companies with talented candidates looking for internships, part-time jobs, freelance work and contract positions.
