Although employment opportunities are slim in many fields, job prospects for those who have completed beautician courses are very good. In fact, based on the number of jobs available and unfilled, the Florida Department of Labor projects that beauty related occupations will be some of the fastest growing jobs in the state.

There are many different types of jobs available in the beauty field, from hairdressers to manicurists. Manicurists may work in hair or in specialized manicure salons where they file and shape nails, add nail extensions and do nail art. Skin care specialists work in the beauty field cleaning and toning the skin with facials, messages, waxing. If they are trained to do so, they can remove excess hair using electrolysis equipment.

All over the country, beauticians work in a variety of venues, including hair salons and nursing homes. In the Sunshine State, beautician jobs are available in many of the larger tourist hotels and on cruise liners leaving from Florida ports.

More experienced workers can move on to roles as instructors, salon managers, and beauty consultants. After a few years of working for others, many beauticians choose to open their own salons or work out of their homes.

As with any job, the more training a person has in the various specialties of her field, the better chance she has of finding a job. More upscale salons are looking for people with a wide range of skills and several years of experience in the beauty field. Florida, like most other states, requires special training and certification.

Cosmetologists must have 1200 hours of training, while nail technologists are required to get 240 hours of training. Skin care specialists need 260 hours of instruction before they can take the test for a state license

These beautician courses must be taken through a state accredited cosmetology school in Florida. Florida also has reciprocal agreements with most other states to accept equivalent courses taken at their accredited schools.

Anyone looking for a rewarding career in Florida should consider the beauty field. There is a demand for workers and continuous opportunities for advancement.
